The Word of God

Today’s song comes from Cornerstone Bible Church, Katy, Texas. The purpose of their music is a “desire to live out the command in Colossians 3:16 ‘Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with gratefulness in your hearts to God’…we want to sing old and new hymns, as well as write new songs for our church (Psalm 96:1-6), all in the context of God’s word dwelling richly in the lives of the body at Cornerstone1.” I love it when churchs have a biblical understanding of music and singing at the heart of their worship ministry. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it this song and many others!

The Word of God will ever stand
The anchor for my soul
Eternal truth firm to the end
The Gospel of my God
Though kingdoms fall and seasons change
His Word my hope and stay
His promises will never fade
Take courage, O my soul

Refrain
Hallelujah, praise the Lord our God
All sufficient is His Word
Through the ages every line is sure
Hallelujah, praise the Lord

The Word of God is my supply
In every trial or need
No sorrow deep or dark of night
These pages cannot meet
The mind of God to sinful man
What riches are within
I need no other source of life
To save and sanctify [Refrain]

The Word of God reigns over me
And to it I will bow
Each law contained is clarity
The way of life to know
O let me hide His Word within
That I might cease from sin
And honor God with every breath
In holiness and truth [Refrain]

The Word of God victorious
Will govern His true church
The scriptures we proclaim and teach
With all authority
The Word of God our surety
Sufficient it will be
To purify, protect and keep
Through all eternity [Refrain]

All Glory Be Forever

Today’s song is by Sovereign Grace, and it’s taken from their 2013 album”Grace Has Come”, songs based on the book of Romans (my favourite book in the bible!) I hope you enjoy this one!

We had turned from God to sin’s disgrace
We chose the path to hell
Perfect law of God condemned our race
For all in Adam fell
But the righteousness of God appeared
And the world found hope again
For the Righteous One has come down to bear
All the curse of sin and death

Refrain
Now to Him Who’s seated on the throne
All glory be forever
Oh, the depths of wisdom, grace, and power
All glory be forever
All glory be forever

Every bond of sin that held us fast
Is left in Jesus’ grave
We’ve been freed from all that gripped our past
From Satan’s rule and reign
We’ve been raised to life to breathe His grace
As captives now reclaimed
All our guilt is gone, all our strivings ceased
We’re alive to seek His fame [Refrain]

Now our future’s fixed, our journey clear
God will not let us go
Every trial that tempts our hearts to fear
He’ll use to give us hope
All creation groans as we await
What our eyes have longed to see
Every pain and evil we’ve long endured
Will be crushed by Christ our King [Refrain]

My Saviour’s Love Is Greater Still

Today’s song comes from a couple called Abe & Liza, who write songs from Scripture. This lovely song is saturated with truth from God’s word including Romans 8, Philippians 3, 1 John 3, Revelation 7, and many more. They have described this song as an adult version of the children’s song “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so”1. Enjoy!

My righteousness is not my own
In Christ I stand before the throne
And if my heart with guilt is filled
My Saviour’s love is greater still

Though I deserve the wrath of God
He washed me in the Saviour’s blood
How great my sins that He was killed
My Saviour’s love is greater still

O how great, how deep and wide
Is the love of Jesus Christ

Riches and honour I disdain
For all this passing world is vain
If earthly dreams were all fulfilled
My Saviour’s love is greater still

Through many trials I must go
Until He brings me safely home
The cup of sorrows may be filled
My Saviour’s love is greater still

O how great, how deep and wide
Is the love of Jesus Christ

And when I walk on streets of gold
What wonders will my eyes behold
Through endless glory, come what will
My Saviour’s love is greater still

O how great, how deep and wide
Is the love of Jesus Christ

My righteousness is not my own
In Christ I stand before the throne
And if my heart with guilt is filled
My Saviour’s love is greater still

Delight In The Word

Today’s hymn is from Charles Wesley and is centred around delighting in God’s word. I pray that these words can be you the words of your heart as you choose to delight in God’s truth this year. Enjoy!

When quiet in my house I sit,
Thy book be my companion still;
My joy Thy sayings to repeat,
Talk o’er the records of Thy will,
And search the oracles divine,
Till every heart-felt word be mine.

O may the gracious words divine
Subject of all my converse be;
So will the Lord his follower join,
And walk and talk himself with me.
So shall my heart his presence prove,
And burn with everlasting love.

Oft as I lay me down to rest,
O may the reconciling word
Sweetly compose my weary breast;
While on the bosom of my Lord
I sink in blissful dreams away,
And visions of eternal day.

Rising to sing my Saviour’s praise,
Thee may I publish all day long;
And let thy precious word of grace
Flow from my heart, and fill my tongue;
Fill all my life with purest love,
And join me to the Church above.

Love of Christ

Today’s song comes from Carmel Worship. and they are from North Carolina’s Carmel Baptist Church. The songs they share are based on scripture, and have grown up within the life of the singing local congregation. This particular song has been taken from Ephesians 3:14-19. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one!

Refrain
God would you give to us the strength
To comprehend together with all the saints
What is the breadth and length and height and depth
And to know the love of Christ

I bow the knee before the Father
From whom each family is named
That by the riches of His glory
He may give you power and strength [Refrain]

Through His Spirit, Christ is living
Within our hearts, He dwells through faith
Thus being rooted, and established
Being grounded in His love [Refrain]

And to know Christ’s love
Surpassing all we know
That He may fill us all
With all the fullness of God [Refrain]

Salvation’s Golden Chain

Today’s song comes from a group I recently shared called Grace Collective – two pastors who write theologically robust songs with great melodies. I found this song and love the melody with the awesome lyrics based on Romans 8. I’m sure you’ll be humming this with me!

Chosen by a loving God
By no merit or will
Thought my days were dark with sin
And grace was foreign still
Gods sent grace in Christ his son
To save my hell bound soul
Hallelujah praise to Christ
I’m chosen by grace alone

When my soul was dead within
His spirit spoke so sweet
”Jesus shed his blood for you”
His earthly work complete
“Rise from sin and death’s dark hole
Rise and run to Christ”
I obeyed that heavenly call
And rose in marvellous light

What a day and what a sound
To hear the verdict made:
“Justified, condemned no more”
My boundless debt was paid
Christ imputed perfect life
And bound me in his grace
Righteousness that’s not my own
Will cover me all my days

When the course of life has run
And eyes have finally closed.
With my God in realms above
I’ll worship him enthroned
All my sin my pain my grief
I’ll never know again
Wholly truly glorified
Eternity’s just began
Tethered by your golden chain
Eternally secure
Praise to you my sovereign God
Forever and ever more

Voices

Today’s song is called Voices from 20schemes. The writer of the song explains the intention of the song is “to try and embed a few of the key principles that we learn from the book of Proverbs. While reading through Proverbs around a table, with a mix of mature believers, unbelievers, and new believers who had just recently come to faith but had no background knowledge whatsoever of the Bible, one of the things I was aware of was how this book could easily be misread or misunderstood. Without a thorough grounding of the free work of grace, the gospel, what Jesus accomplished on the cross and in His resurrection, Proverbs could easily be made into a kind of spiritual self-help book. In short, an unbeliever can easily take some vague ‘good advice’ from the book of Proverbs.1” I hope you enjoy this one!

All authority above
And on earth belong to Him
Fount of wisdom, truth and love;
Christ, our refuge from our sin

As we walk this narrow way
Speak O Lord with clarity
We are prone to go astray
Give us hearts that cling to Thee

Give us wisdom, understanding
Give us hearts of reverent fear
In our weakness walk beside
In Your mercy draw us near

When the voice of folly speaks
With her charm and vanity
Though seductive her deceit
Give us hearts that run to Thee

When the voice of wisdom speaks
In her calm and purity
Welcome simple hearts that seek
Life eternal found in Thee

Give us wisdom, understanding,
Make the danger clear to see
Mute the voices of this world
Guide our wandering hearts to Thee

When the tempters voice is strong
Raise our eyes to Calvary
Now the chains that bound are gone
Hallelujah! Praise to Thee!

You are worthy! You are worthy!
You have won the victory!
In our weakness walk beside
Now our souls find rest in Thee.

Plant Your Word

Today’s song is another instance of Spotify’s algorithm working in my favour. Describing themselves, they write of Grace Collective “In 2019 Matt and Joel, both worship pastors in southeastern Virginia at the time, became friends with a common passion for writing congregational worship music that blends contemporary style with theological depth.” I’ve really been enjoying the album Kingdom of Your Son, which are songs based on the Book of Colossians, which is where today’s song is from. Enjoy!

Lord plant your word deep in our hearts,
And may it richly dwell;
Make us like Jesus and less like ourselves.
Our soul sick with sin,
By your Word are made well;
Lord plant your word deep in our hearts,
And may it richly dwell.

Lord plant your word deep in our hearts,
To overflow with praise;
Grant us a new soul that sings of your faith,
Where melodies rise as we lift up your Name;
Lord plant your word deep in our hearts,
To overflow with praise.

Lord plant your word deep in our hearts,
With thankfulness renew;
For all that you are, for grace and for truth.
For your sacrifice, and our new life in you;
Lord plant your word deep in our hearts,
With thankfulness renew.

Plant your word within us Lord,
Sow a seed of faith and love;
May it grow, bear fruit and move in us,
Plant your word in us.

Our soul sick with sin,
By your Word are made well;
Lord plant your word deep in our hearts,
And may it richly dwell.

Every Promise

Songs are a great way of remembering and meditating on the great truths of the faith during the 6 days and 22 hours of the week when we are not at church. This song, written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend, reminds us that when we fall into sin, when we are faced with difficult decisions, we can rely on God’s promises to forgive, to guide, to strengthen us just when we need it. Jesus Himself said we are to live not by bread alone, but by the word of God – perhaps songs like this can help us to do that!1

From the breaking of the dawn
To the setting of the sun,
I will stand on every promise of Your word.
Words of power, strong to save,
That will never pass away,
I will stand on every promise of Your word.
For Your covenant is sure,
And on this I am secure,
I can stand on every promise of Your word.

When I stumble and I sin,
Condemnation pressing in,
I will stand on every promise of Your word.
You are faithful to forgive,
That in freedom I might live,
So I stand on every promise of Your word.
Guilt to innocence restored:
You remember sins no more!
So I’ll stand on every promise of Your word.

When I’m faced with anguished choice,
I will listen for Your voice,
And I’ll stand on every promise of Your word.
Through this dark and troubled land
You will guide me with your hand
As I stand on every promise of Your word.
And you’ve promised to complete
Every work begun in me,
So I’ll stand on every promise of Your word.

Hope that lifts me from despair,
Love that casts out every fear,
As I stand on every promise of Your word.
Not forsaken, not alone,
For the Comforter has come,
And I stand on every promise of Your word.
Grace sufficient, grace for me,
Grace for all who will believe,
We will stand on every promise of Your word.

Blessed Are the Humble Souls That See

This hymn was written by prolific hymn writer Isaac Watts, and appeared in his Hymns & Sacred Songs book is 1709. Watts preached his first sermon when he was twenty-four years old, and in 1702 was ordained pastor of the eminent Independent congregation in Mark Lane, over which Dr. John Owen had once presided. His learning and piety, gentleness and largeness of heart have earned him the title of the ‘Melanchthon’ of his day. His published hymns numbering more than eight hundred1. The hymn below originally has 8 stanzas, however the song version I have included has only the 3. Enjoy!

Blessed are the humble souls that see
their emptiness and poverty;
treasures of grace to them are giv’n,
and crowns of joy laid up in heav’n.

Blest are the men of broken heart,
who mourn for sin with inward smart;
the blood of Christ divinely flows,
a healing balm for all their woes.

Blessed are the souls that thirst for grace,
hunger and long for righteousness;
they shall be well supplied and fed,
with living streams and living bread.
