Consider Christ

Today’s song comes from Emu Music, one of my favourite modern music groups. Any song that exhorts us to consider Christ must be worthy of our attention, right? Enjoy this one!

Consider Christ, the source of our salvation
That he should take the penalty for me
Though he was pure, a lamb without a blemish;
He took my sins and nailed them to the tree

Refrain
My Lord and God
You are so rich in mercy
Mere words alone are not sufficient thanks;
So take my life, transform, renew and change me
That I might be a living sacrifice

Consider Christ, that he could trust his Father
In the garden of Gethsemane
Though full of dread and fearful of the anguish;
He drank the cup that was reserved for me. [Refrain]

Consider Christ, for death he has defeated;
And he arose, appeared for all to see.
And now he sits at God’s right hand in heaven
Where he prepares a resting place for me. [Refrain]

My Saviour

Today is another song by The Grace Collective, a worship duo in southeastern Virginia, USA. I really enjoyed the rhythm of this song and the words are beautiful. Enjoy!

My Saviour thought not of himself
When laying down his heavenly crown
Forsaking realms in heaven blessed
To walk upon our cursed ground
In wisdom sought through tears and strife
Through hunger pains and wonderings
To gain a pure and worthy prize
A bride reclaimed through suffering.

My Saviour thought not of himself
When bearing up that heavy cross
Nor of the sting of bleeding flesh
But grace no matter what the cost
His mercy flowed in crimson streams
His kindness heard in laboured breathes
T’was finished was his final plea
As he embraced a sinner’s death.

My Saviour thought not of himself
When rising up in victory
But granting robes of righteousness
For sinners saved eternally
For there’s no longer cause of shame
He washed me in his precious blood
He only sought his Father’s fame
He only sought my every good.

Oh to follow in his steps
Oh to live like Christ my King
Oh to give my every breath
To live like Him in word and deed.

Jesus We Place Into Your Hands

Today’s song comes from one of my favourite British worship groups, Joyful Noise. Of their EP ‘Our Sure Foundation’, they write that this is a “five track EP of congregational songs that celebrate the person and work of Jesus Christ. He is the rock upon which we stand, the sure foundation of our lives”. Amen, and you would do well to encourage others to look to Jesus with this song; enjoy!

Jesus we place into Your hands
The things we cannot do
We lack the strength to walk in Your ways,
O Lord we cry out to You
Every godly hope and dream
Lie far beyond our reach
Lord in our striving help us to seek
The grace that meets every need

Refrain
Jesus we give to You
The things we cannot do
We turn away from our own strength
O Lord we turn to You

Jesus we place into Your hands
This cross we cannot bear
We lack the strength to carry its weight
O Lord we cry out in prayer!
Is Your grace enough for us?
You promised it is so
Lord in our hurting send from above
Your strength for our trial below [Refrain]

Jesus we place into Your hands
The unseen days ahead
Fearful they seem but You know all things
And never have failed us yet
Jesus it’s enough for us
To know You know the way
Lord in our waiting help us to trust
Your will for each passing day [Refrain]

Christ Is Our Cornerstone

Today’a hymn is a translation of the Latin hymn, Angularis fundamentum lapis, from Hymns of the Primitive Church, which was translated by Rev. John Chandler, one of the most successful translators of hymns. Ordained as a deacon in 1831 and priest in 1832, he succeeded his father as the patron and vicar of Whitley, in 1837. Enjoy reading this hymn this Lord’s Day!

Christ is our cornerstone,
on him alone we build;
with his true saints alone
the courts of heaven are filled;
on his great love
our hopes we place
of present grace
and joys above.

With psalms and hymns of praise
this place of prayer shall ring;
our voices we will raise,
the Three-in-One to sing;
and thus proclaim
in joyful song
both loud and long
that glorious name.

Here, gracious God, draw near
as in your name we bow;
each true petition hear,
accept each faithful vow;
then more and more
on all who pray
each holy day
your blessings pour.

Here may we gain from heaven
the grace which we implore;
and may that grace, once given,
be with us evermore;
until that day
when all the blessed
to endless rest
are called away.

If Christ Is Mine

Today’s song is the most recent release from UK group Joyful Noise. Speaking of the song they say “If Christ is mine celebrates the sufficiency of Christ for the believer. We are united with him in all his fullness – all of Christ is all of ours. He is enough1.” Enjoy this one!

If Christ is mine I need no more
He is the greatest gift of all
The one who angel hosts adore
Now has me safely in his hold
His life my life! His death my death!
All mine his every righteous breath!
‘My precious child!’ the father cries
When all of Christ is all of mine!

If Christ is mine my guilt is gone
It died with Him upon the tree
The weight of sin I held so long
Was laid on Jesus there for me
O sweet forgiveness! Precious peace!
Condemned no more! My soul is free!
My weary burden cast aside!
When all of Christ is all of mine!

If Christ is mine I will not fear
Though many stand against his name
Above their noise his voice is clear
‘Behold! I’ve overcome the grave!’
My living lord! My risen king!
What’s left to fear if I’m with him?
For death is swallowed up in life
When all of Christ is all of mine!

What joy to know that Christ is mine!
Who holds me ever in his love
The sure foundation of my life
Whose grace will always be enough!
Though all I have is stripped away
Still I rejoice for Christ remains!
And when he comes he’ll lift me high
For all of Christ is all of mine!

I’m Not Ashamed To Own My Lord

Today’s hymn is by Isaac Watts and tells of the one who is unashamed to be known as a follower of Christ. This hymn first appeared in his Hymns and Spiritual Songs in 1707. I hope these words can be your own today; enjoy!

I’m not ashamed to own my Lord,
Or to defend His cause;
Maintain the honor of His Word,
The glory of His cross.

Jesus, my God! I know His name,
His name is all my trust;
Nor will He put my soul to shame,
Nor let my hope be lost.

Firm as His throne His promise stands,
And He can well secure
What I’ve committed to His hands
Till the decisive hour.

Then will He own my worthless name
Before His Father’s face,
And in the new Jerusalem
Appoint my soul a place.

Ivory Palaces

Today’s hymn is from Henry Barraclough. From 1911-13, he was secretary to Member of Parliament George Scott Robertson. He then joined the Chapman-Alexander evangelistic team as a pianist, and traveled with them to America and remained there. He fought in World War I, rising to the rank of sergeant major, then became secretary, and later an administrator, of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (1919-611. Barraclough has said his inspiration came to write this hymn when he was a young man and heard a sermon on Philippians 2:6-8, and Christ emptying himself. Enjoy!

My Lord has garments so wondrous fine,
and myrrh their texture fills;
its fragrance reached to this heart of mine,
with joy my being thrills.

Refrain
Out of the ivory palaces
into a world of woe,
only his great eternal love
made my Saviour go.

His life had also its sorrows sore,
for aloes had a part;
and when I think of the cross he bore,
my eyes with teardrops start.

His garments, too, were in cassia dipped,
with healing in a touch;
each time my feet in some sin have slipped,
he took me from its clutch.

In garments glorious he will come,
to open wide the door;
and I shall enter my heavenly home,
to dwell forevermore.

Jesus, The Very Thought of Thee

Today’s hymn comes from a Latin text “Dulcis Jesus memoria” and it is generally ascribed to Bernard of Clairvaux; the earliest manuscript containing the poem dates from the turn of the 12th century, when Bernard was a child. It was later translated into English by Edward Caswall in 18491. Enjoy!

Jesus, the very thought of thee
with sweetness fills the breast;
but sweeter far thy face to see,
and in thy presence rest.

O hope of every contrite heart,
O joy of all the meek,
to those who fall, how kind thou art!
How good to those who seek!

But what to those who find? Ah, this
nor tongue nor pen can show;
the love of Jesus, what it is,
none but his loved ones know.

Jesus, our only joy be thou,
as thou our prize wilt be;
Jesus, be thou our glory now,
and through eternity.

Jesus! Name of Wondrous Love

Today’s hymn is written by William How (1823-1897) who studied at Wadham College, Oxford, and Durham University and was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. He served various congregations and became Suffragan Bishop in east London in 1879 and Bishop of Wakefield in 1888. Called both the “poor man’s bishop” and “the children’s bishop,” How was known for his work among the destitute in the London slums and among the factory workers in west Yorkshire. While rector in Whittington, How wrote some sixty hymns, including many for children1 . Enjoy this one!

Jesus! Name of wondrous love,
name all other names above,
unto which must ev’ry knee
bow in deep humility.

Jesus! Name decreed of old,
to the maiden mother told,
kneeling in her lowly cell,
by the angel Gabriel.

Jesus! Name of priceless worth
to the fallen here on earth
for the promise that it gave,
“Jesus shall his people save.”

Jesus! Name of mercy mild,
given to the Holy Child
when the cup of human woe
first he tasted here below.

Jesus! Only name that’s giv’n
under all the mighty heav’n
whereby those to sin enslaved
burst their fetters and are saved.

Jesus! Name of wondrous love,
human name of God above;
pleading only this, we flee
helpless, O our God, to thee.

All My Boast Is In Jesus

Today’s hymn is another one by the great duo Matt Papa and Matt Boswell along with Bryan Fowler. Describing the inspiration for the song, they say “this new song, “All My Boast is in Jesus,” attempts to help us sing this truth of boasting in Christ and the salvation he accomplished through his life, death, and resurrection. The prayer behind this song is that the Lord might retune our hearts from singing of self—and instead glory in Christ alone.1” Enjoy!

What wonder of wonders, what love is this
That Christ would die for me
His goodness, His merit, His righteousness
This sinner’s only plea
O foolish pride, be crucified
The work is finished

Refrain
All my boast is in Jesus
All my hope is His love
And I will glory forever
In what the cross has done

Now fully forgiven, my life is filled
With graces undeserved
For mercy that flowed down that sacred hill
Let praises now return
Rise up my soul, and bless the Lord
Who else is worthy?

Refrain

O praise the One forever blessed
Him alone my heart adores
And I will boast in nothing less
Than the love of Christ my Lord

I boast not in riches, in strength or might
But in the grace of God
I glory in weakness, to live is Christ
In plenty or in want
That I may know, that all may see
His pow’r within me

Refrain

Now I stand in His freedom
Ransomed, clean in His sight
And I cannot be ashamed for
My boast is Jesus Christ
My boast is Jesus Christ
Forever my boast is Jesus Christ
