How Can We Sinners Know

Today’s hymn comes from Charles Wesley, and it speaks of the inward testimony of the Holy Spirit, the changed heart, and the transformed life as ways we can know we’ve been born again. I hope you can have the confidence today that Christ has forgiven you; enjoy!

Meter: 6.6.8.6

How can we sinners know
Our sins on earth forgiven?
How can my gracious Saviour show
My name inscribed in heaven?

What we have felt and seen,
With confidence we tell,
And publish to the ends of earth
The signs infallible.

We who in Christ believe
That He for us hath died,
We all His unknown peace receive
And feel His blood applied.

Exults for joy our rising soul,
Disburthened of her load,
And swells, unutterably full
Of glory and of God.

His love surpasses far
The love of all beneath,
We find within, and dare
The pointless darts of death.

Stronger than death, or sin, or hell,
The mystic power we prove,
And conquerors of the world we dwell
In heaven, who dwell in love.

We by His Spirit prove
And know the things of God,
The things which freely of His love
He hath on us bestowed.

The meek and lowly heart
That in our Saviour was,
To us that Spirit doth impart
And sign us with His cross.

Our nature’s turned, our mind
Transformed in all its powers,
And both the witnesses are joined,
The Spirit of God with ours.

His glory is our sole design,
We live our God to please,
And rise with filial fear divine
To perfect holiness.

The Spirit of my God
Hath certified Him mine,
And all the tokens showed,
Infallible, divine.

Hereby the pardoned sinner knows
His sins on earth forgiven,
And thus my gracious Saviour shows
My name inscribed in Heaven.

None Else But Thee, For Evermore

Today’s hymn comes from Samuel J. Stone (1839-1900), an Anglican priest and poet. Stone wrote a collection of hymns, ‘Lyra Fidelium – Twelve Hymns on the Twelve Articles of the Apostles’ Creed’, which arose out of a theological controversy in the mid-nineteenth century. Another Anglican bishop of Natal, South Africa, wrote a book that expressed critical views of the historicity of parts of Scripture and questioned some articles of the Christian faith. Stone was one of the people who defended the orthodox Christian faith. Today’s hymn is based on the article “I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth1. Enjoy reading this one!

In addition, moving forward I will include the meter for each hymn if I have it, since it has been requested 🙂

Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8

None else but Thee, for evermore,
One, All, we dread, believe, adore:
Great Earth and Heaven shall have their day
And worn and old shall pass away,
But Thou remainest, on Thy throne
Eternal, changeless, and alone!

None else we praise! in every form,
In peace of calm and power of storm,
In simple flower and mystic star,
In all around and all afar,
In Grandeur, Beauty, Truth, but Thee
None else we hear, None else we see.

None else we love! for sweeter grace
That made anew a ruined race:
The heirs of life, the lords of death,
With earliest voice and latest breath,
When days begin, when days are done,
Bless we the Father for the Son!

None else we trust! our flesh may fail,
Our heart may sink when foes assail,
But Thou art strength to be our stay,
And Glory not to pass away:
None else in life and death have we,
But we have all in all with Thee!

Yea, None but Thee all worlds confess,
And those redeemed ones numberless:
None else, from everlasting One,
And evermore beside Thee none.
Of all that is, has been, shall be,
Father of Life, None else but Thee!

I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord

Today’s hymn comes from Timothy Dwight (1752-1817), grandson of the famous pastor and Theologian Jonathan Edwards. He served as a chaplain under George Washington during the Revolutionary War and wrote songs and sermons for the men in his regiment. When Dwight returned from military service in 1778, he became a successful farmer, a Congregational minister at Greenfield, Connecticut, a state legislator, and a member of the faculty at Yale, where he was named president in 1795. Dwight was also was one of the first American hymn writers. He wrote 33 hymns, with the one for this week perhaps being his best known. This hymn was published in 1800 at the beginning of the Second Great Awakening1. This is a good one to mediate on before the Lord’s Day; enjoy!

I love thy kingdom, Lord,
the house of thine abode,
the church our blest Redeemer saved
with his own precious blood.

I love thy church, O God:
her walls before thee stand,
dear as the apple of thine eye
and graven on thy hand.

For her my tears shall fall,
for her my prayers ascend;
to her my cares and toils be giv’n,
’til toils and cares shall end.

Beyond my highest joy
I prize her heav’nly ways,
her sweet communion, solemn vows,
her hymns of love and praise.

Jesus, thou Friend divine,
our Savior and our King,
thy hand from ev’ry snare and foe
shall great deliv’rance bring.

Sure as thy truth shall last,
to Zion shall be giv’n
the brightest glories earth can yield,
and brighter bliss of heav’n.

His Glory and My Good

Today’s song is a new one from CityAlight. This is a good one to reflect on during trials and difficulties. Enjoy!

I have seen my Father’s glory
Revealed in Jesus Christ
And the more that I behold Him
The more He satisfies
When I gaze upon His beauty
When I see Him as I should
Then my eyes are lifted upward
For His glory and my good

There is hope in every trial
For I can trust the Lord
He will turn my heart towards Him
And help me bear the thorn
So in faith I follow Jesus
On the road not understood
For I know that He is working
For His glory and my good

Refrain
To our God be the glory
To our God be praise
He alone the name above all names
I will boast ever only in the Lord my God
For I know His glory is my good

See the open arms of Jesus
Upon the cross that day
What they understood as weakness
Deserves my every praise
For the charge that was against me
It was nailed into the wood
Yes I know that He has saved me
For His glory and my good [Refrain]

Would I gladly be made nothing
That Christ would be made more
Would I seek the only kingdom
That far outweighs them all
I will stand before my Father
Where the faithful saints have stood
And with joy my heart shall praise Him
For His glory and my good [Refrain]

Be Merciful

Today’s song comes from Phil Moore, Director of Ministry for Youth and Music at a church in the UK. This song is a call for the church to shine in this world so that all the nations may know and praise Christ. Enjoy

Be merciful oh God of grace
Show us the brightness of your face
That you redeemed church may shine
In this dark world with light divine

That light divine oh let it spread
Till all the darkness shall have fled
This fallen world’s dark fading ray
Be lost in the bright of day

Refrain
Oh church arise and proclaim
The glory of his name
Let the nations sing
Of Christ the risen King

Reveal oh Lord your saving plan
To all the families of man
Let distant nations hear your word
Let every people praise the Lord

Let them with joy your praises sing
Earth’s righteous Judge and sovereign King
Directed by your holy word
Let all the nations praise the Lord [Refrain]

Then shall this barren world assume
New beauty and the desert bloom
Our God shall richly bless us then
And all men fear his name Amen

How Sad our State

Today’s hymn comes from Isaac Watts, and it tells of our poor and wretched state before Christ, yet his mercy and grace in saving us. Hallelujah, what a Saviour! Enjoy!

How sad our state by nature is!
Our sin how deep it stains!
And Satan binds our captive minds
Fast in his slavish chains.

But there’s a voice of sovereign grace
Sounds from the sacred Word,
‘Come, all despairing sinners, come,
And trust upon the Lord.’

My soul obeys the almighty call,
And runs to this relief;
I would believe Thy promise, Lord,
O help my unbelief.

To the dear fountain of Thy blood,
Incarnate God, I fly;
Here let me wash my guilty soul
From crimes of deepest dye.

A guilty, weak and helpless worm,
On Thy kind arms I fall;
Be Thou my strength and righteousness,
My Jesus and my All.

O How Happy Are They

Today’s hymn comes the father of hymnody, Charles Wesley. This hymn describes the joy he felt on receiving Christ and becoming a Christian. I hope this is a joy you too felt, and still do! Enjoy!

O how happy are they
Who the Saviour obey,
And have laid up their treasure above!
Tongue cannot express
The sweet comfort and peace
Of a soul in its earliest love.

That comfort was mine,
When the favor divine
I first found in the blood of the Lamb;
When my heart it believed,
What a joy it received,
What a heaven in Jesus’ name!

Jesus all the day long
Was my joy and my song;
O that all His salvation may see!
He hath loved me, I cried,
He hath suffered, and died,
To redeem such a rebel as me.

O the rapturous height
Of the holy delight,
Which I felt in the life giving blood!
Of my Saviour possessed
I was perfectly blest,
As if filled with the fullness of God.

Psalm 16

Today’s song is Psalm 16 from The Corner Room. If you have not listened to their music, you are really missing out! They put word for word ESV scripture to music. The songs are written very well musically, and do not sound clunky at all. They will help you more easily memorise lots of scripture. Enjoy this one!

Preserve me, O God, for in You, I take refuge
I say to the Lord, You are my Lord
I have no good apart from You

As for the saints in the land
They are the excellent ones
In whom is all my delight
The sorrows of those who run after
Another god shall multiply

Their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
Or take their names on my lips

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup
You hold my lot
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places
Indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance
Beautiful inheritance

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel
In the night also my heart instructs me
I have set the Lord always before me
Because He is at my right hand
I shall not be shaken

Therefore, my heart is glad
And my whole being rejoices
My flesh also dwells secure
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol
Or let Your holy one see corruption

You make known to me the path of life
In Your presence there is fullness of joy
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore

Grace Unmeasured

Today’s song is vintage Sovereign Grace, from 2005. It’s a song reflecting on God’s grace and all that has been done, and all that will be done for us. You can’t reflect on God’s grace enough! At my church we usually include a reading of Ephesians 2:1-9 before the last refrain. Enjoy this one!

Grace unmeasured, vast and free
That knew me from eternity
That called me out before my birth
To bring You glory on this earth
Grace amazing, pure and deep
That saw me in my misery
That took my curse and owned my blame
So I could bear Your righteous name

Refrain
Grace paid for my sins
And brought me to life
Grace clothes me with power
To do what is right
Grace will lead me to heaven
Where I’ll see Your face
And never cease
To thank You for Your grace

Grace abounding, strong and true
That makes me long to be like You
That turns me from my selfish pride
To love the cross on which You died
Grace unending all my days
You’ll give me strength to run this race
And when my years on earth are through
The praise will all belong to You [Refrain]

Jesus, What A Friend For Sinners

Today’s hymn comes from John Wilbur Chapman (1859-1918). Chapman entered full-time evangelistic work, preaching with Dwight L. Moody and also conducting many of his own revivals. This hymn was written in 1910 when Chapman preached that Jesus was a friend to the greatest sinner. He used Luke 7:34 as his inspiration, “A friend of tax collectors and sinners1.” Enjoy the version below by Matthew Smith.

Jesus! what a Friend for sinners!
Jesus! Lover of my soul;
friends may fail me, foes assail me;
He, my Saviour, makes me whole.
Hallelujah! what a Savior!
Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving,
He is with me to the end.

Jesus! what a Strength in weakness!
Let me hide myself in Him;
tempted, tried, and sometimes failing,
He, my Strength, my vict’ry wins.
Hallelujah! what a Saviour!
Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving;
He is with me to the end.

Jesus! what a Help in sorrow!
While the billows o’er me roll,
even when my heart is breaking,
He, my Comfort, helps my soul.
Hallelujah! what a Saviour!
Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving;
He is with me to the end.

Jesus! what a Guide and Keeper!
While the tempest still is high,
storms about me, night o’ertakes me,
He, my Pilot, hears my cry.
Hallelujah! what a Saviour!
Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving;
He is with me to the end.

Jesus! I do now receive Him,
more than all in Him I find;
He hath granted me forgiveness;
I am His, and He is mine!
Hallelujah! what a Saviour!
Hallelujah! what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving;
He is with me to the end.
